Help:Simple Editing
This is a general description of what you need to know about editing Povo.

Contents

The Basics

The first thing to know about editing Povo is that you can’t break it. Every time you add or make an edit to an entry, the previous version is saved in the “History” section. If you’re not happy with the edits you’ve made, you can always revert back to the previous version. And remember, Povo is a collaborative effort. If you can’t figure out how to change it back, someone else will inevitably find it and fix it for you.
Use Povo’s edit functions to add or edit a listing or a block page. To edit, click on an "edit" button, located either to the right of a specific listing, or at the right top of a block page. This will take you to an editing page with a text box containing wikiText, the editable source code that produces the page and content. An edit toolbar at the top of the text box gives you an easy way to underline, bold, or italicize text, to create tables or numbered lists, to create external or internal links and to check your spelling. The "PREVIEW" tab will show you what the wikiText will look like as content, but your edits won’t be saved and the copy won’t be changed until you click on the "save page" button at the bottom. It is much easier to see formatting problems from the "PREVIEW" page than from the raw wikiText. You can make changes and preview the page as many times as necessary.

Adding a Business

There are two ways to add a business in Povo!
The first and easiest way is to hover your mouse on the most left tab of your page that describes in which region you are and click "Add Business" on the pop up window that shows up. This is the easiest way because Povo will do all the work for you and will find in which block page your business belongs to.
The second way needs some basic wiki experience. Read the following text to become familiar with the wikiText and the wikiRules and enjoy your editing!
Type the address of the business you want to add into the "where:" search box. This will direct you to the block page that this address belongs to. For example if you were going to enter a listing for Sonsie Restaurant at 327 Newbury Street, you would be directed to the block page: Newbury Street (307-366). Click the edit tab at the top. This will launch a page with the wiki code for Newbury Street (307-366). Scroll to the category your business is in, i.e., "Restaurants", "Shopping", etc. Scroll through the other sections to find the right spot to add your listing (Povo pages prefer alphabetic ordering so that they can be more readable). You can also click directly the edit button that refers to the main section (eg."Restaurants") that your business belongs.
Tip: While you are editing in Povo, you can always click the PREVIEW tab to see how your text looks like!

Section Header

Every section/business has a Section Header that looks like this:

This Section Header is the first thing you need to enter in order to add a business. The wiki text that produces this section header is the following:
===Sonsie Restaurant===
<address>327 Newbury Street</address>
<phone>617 351-2500</phone>
<rating>Boston/Restaurants/Sonsie Restaurant</rating>
<mainArticle>Sonsie Restaurant</mainArticle>

All these tags keep a place in the Section Header for the basic information for the business. Here is a short description of each one:

<address>The text you write here, will appear in the address spot of the Section Header as the address of the listing.</address>
<phone>The text you write here, will appear in the phone spot of the Section Header as the phone of the listing.</phone>
<rating>The text you write here, will give the ability to all Povo users to rate this listing or write a review about it.</rating>
<url>The text you write here, will appear in the Business-website spot of the Section Header and will be a link to the business's website.</url>
<mainArticle>The text here will be the title of the PovoPage that is dedicated to this business. The title on the Section Header will automatically be a link to this page </mainArticle>

Tip:The equal signs (===) before and after the name of your business, make your contribution an editable Section.

Section Text

Write a description of your business here.

Every section/business has a Section Footer that includes all the tags that describe it and looks like this:
The wiki text that produces this section header is the following:
<tags>restaurants,breakfast,$$$, dinner, bar, international, wine</tags>

Done?

Are you finished and satisfied with your contribution? Click the "Save Page" button at the bottom of the page. Your section is saved. Congratulations!

Reverting to a Previous Version

To see to a previous version of a page, click on the tab "History" on the top right. If you want to restore this version of the page, click the "(revert)" link. This will bring up a confirmation page that shows you exactly what you're reverting back to and will ask you to confirm the action. Clicking "Yes" will complete the Revert operation, clicking "No" will abort it.

Minor & Major Edits

Users have the option of identifying any edit as a "minor edit". Checking the “minor edit” box before saving a page, implies that only superficial differences exist between the current and previous version: spelling corrections, formatting or layout changes, adding links, fixing obvious factual errors, or grammatically rearranging the text without impacting content. By identifying an edit as a “minor edit”, you believe there is no change to the meaning and the edit doesn’t need to be reviewed by anyway else tracking the page. On the other hand, a major edit to content or meaning should be reviewed to confirm that all those interested in the page content are aware of the change. Therefore, any change that affects the meaning of an article is not minor.
The distinction between major and minor edits is important because editors may choose to ignore minor edits when reviewing recent changes. Moreover, signed-in members might set their preferences not to display them. If you think there is any chance that another editor might dispute your change, please don’t mark it as minor.

Creating a New Page

To create a separate "full page" listing for a business (or any other topic such as a neighborhood association, school, etc), simply type "boston.povo.com/AnotherBusiness" into the address bar of your web browser. This will call up a page that looks like this:
Boston:Image:AnotherBusiness
Click on the "Start a new AnotherBusiness article" link and it will open up an editing page to enter your information.
"Tip": If your new Povo page refers to a section in Povo don't forget to add the following tag in the section's text:
<mainArticle>AnotherBusiness</mainArticle>
This will make the name of the section, a clickable link to your new Povo page.

Watchlist

One of the benefits of becoming a Povo member is being able to track edits and updates to pages. When signed in, a “watch” tab will appear at the right top of every page. Click this tab on a page you would like to monitor. Click Preferences at the pop up window that shows up when you hover over the tab with your name at the lest top of the page. Click "Manage Watchlist" to manage your personal watchlist. You can even choose to receive email notification of changes made to the pages you are watching. These can be pages that you have edited or simply pages that hold content you are interested in.

Point of View

Be Collaborative
The one thing Povo isn’t, is opinion neutral. We’re built on the foundation of your knowledge, reviews, and opinions. As are all collaborative efforts, Povo is woven together by a diverse group of contributors and we welcome all of your points of view. But please bear in mind, except for personal reviews, Povo is meant to reflect a collective opinion. We request that you don’t remove the opinions and information of others, however, feel free to rework and improve them, while preserving their sentiment. When in doubt about making a change, go to the "Talk" section for that page and discuss it first.
Be Opinionated
We want everyone to share their personal take on the city. Is an out-of-the-way place worth the trip? Did a restaurant critic’s darling turn out to be a bust? Write a personal review to share your views and use the 5 star rating system to let everyone know how you feel.
