5 Really Cool things about Povo
1. By the People, for the People
- Povo is completely user-created. Built by users, edited by users. We put our trust in the community and know that harnessing your collective knowledge will make Povo better for us all. That's why we are wiki-based and Creative Commons licensed.
- See something wrong? Fix it...
- Want to add more information? Add it...
- Want to link to other pages? Link away...
- Want to create a page, add a listing, make a map? Go ahead, create it...
- Want to add a picture? a video? Upload them!
- Some have described Povo as Wikipedia meets Yellow Pages meets a Travel Guide. I guess that's an 'OK' explanation. We believe that we are building communities: helping people share their knowledge about where they live, work, and play so we can all explore our communities like a true insider.
2. Free Websites
- Povo is unique in that every shop, museum, park, street, neighborhood, bar, restaurant, non-profit can have a free listing with any type of information you'd like: description, hours, credit cards, pictures, videos, links to nearby places of interest...it's a free website really.
- Take a look at Picco, Boomerangs, and Hill Tavern to get an idea of what is possible.
- Most local businesses do not have websites, but with Povo they can have a great site for free.
3. Meta-Search
- That's a fancy word for really specific searches on details of a business or business type.
- So...say you are a Northeastern University student looking for late night pizza. Maybe you know a place, maybe you can ask a friend, or maybe you can find info from a web search engine. But...
- Can you find pizza in Boston? Povo found over 600.
- One that delivers? Way over 50.
- Within 2 miles of Northeastern? Still 25+.
- And where you can do on-line ordering? Only 3 now.
- And which takes the HuskyCard? Just 2 places! On Povo that is an easy and simple search using our tag filters: check it out.
- By the way...if you were dating someone who had Fenway Cash...you could split the bill at Boston House of Pizza, they're the only place that would meet all your needs.
4. Comprehensive and Geographically Aware
- Many sites do a good job with one thing, say restaurants. Some maybe with bars. Some with Tourist stuff. I don't know about you...but that's not how the real world works.
- I might be interested in doing the Freedom Trail in Boston, but since it'd be with my family, I also might want to have ideas for where to grab a bite to eat outdoors near the Old North Church and with Povo, that's easy.
- Every Povo page, listing, location, park...whatever...knows where it is and where it is in relation to everything else. That's how we really live: if we go 'there' we need to park, get a bite to eat, go to the park/museum/whatever, maybe grab a drink afterward. WIth Povo, you can do all that.
5. Heat Maps
- This is simply an amazing way to visualize information.
- For example, it's been hot as heck in Boston the past couple weeks. This heat map Ice Cream 'Hot Spots" in Boston can show you where the ice cream is in and around the city. After viewing the map, click on small or big on the map on the side...and voila now you can see the listings for each of the Ice Cream places.
Thank you for your contribution. You've taken a huge step to making Povo the "word on the street,"
and we appreciate it very much. Because of the complexity of the "wiki text" and code that can be used
on Povo, in order to edit this section in the future you must click the "edit" button to the right of the section
heading (or for the whole page).
